Watch resellers credit Rolex certified pre-owned program with expanding secondary market

Rolex's certified pre-owned channel has claimed market share from independent dealers and marketplaces since its launch, Glossy reported. Despite the direct competition, many secondhand watch sellers told Glossy that Rolex's entry has grown the overall market for pre-owned timepieces, offsetting the loss of individual transactions.

The report characterized Rolex as a watch juggernaut whose move into the lucrative secondhand segment represented a rapid rise. Sellers indicated to Glossy that the net effect of broader market expansion has been worth the commercial adjustment required by the brand's participation.

Rolex's institutional entry into resale mirrors luxury fashion's broader pivot toward controlling secondary channels rather than ceding them to third parties. When a category-defining brand certifies and sells its own pre-owned goods, it lends legitimacy to the entire resale segment, pulling in buyers who previously viewed secondhand as risky or inferior. Independent platforms lose exclusivity but gain a larger addressable market, provided they can compete on service, inventory breadth, or price. The dynamic suggests that brand-operated resale can be accretive to independents in high-consideration categories where trust and authenticity remain friction points.
